Apply a healing or repairing cream to the treated area for 1–15 days, together with sun protection. In some cases, depigmenting creams are recommended to prevent or reduce post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation following laser treatment.

    Results

With each session, the results are cumulative and the improvement increases. In addition, once the sessions are complete, the skin continues to improve over the following 3–6 months as new cells continue to produce new collagen.

How does CO2 laser treatment for scars work?

The CO2 laser acts on the epidermis and dermis by heating the epidermis and the collagen in the dermis to high temperatures. This promotes epidermal renewal and denaturation of old collagen and scar fibrosis in the dermis, stimulating the formation of new collagen.

The CO2 laser is fractional, creating microscopic columns in the epidermis and dermis while leaving the tissue between the columns intact. The tissue within these columns renews itself, producing new collagen and a healthier, better-nourished epidermis, supported by the surrounding healthy tissue, which promotes this repair.

Frequently asked questions about CO2 laser for scars

CO2 laser treatment for scars requires anaesthetic cream to be applied 1 hour before the session to help prevent possible discomfort.

CO2 laser treatment for scars is a safe therapeutic option supported by a large body of research. As with any treatment, it should be performed by a doctor experienced in this technology and with access to the patient’s medical history to minimise the risk of adverse reactions.

Whenever a scar is to be improved and the doctor has assessed the type of scar and the type of skin.

In principle, it can be performed on all patients, but the doctor must decide whether it is appropriate.

It is advisable to wait a few days for the skin to heal.

If the scars are in a localised area, normal activities can be resumed. Each case should be assessed individually.

Apply a healing or repairing cream to the treated area for 1–15 days, together with sun protection. In some cases, depigmenting creams are recommended to prevent or reduce post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation following laser treatment.

After 7–15 days, usual skincare products can be resumed, together with SPF 50+ sun protection.

The results of CO2 laser treatment for scars are gradual. After a few days, the scars appear less noticeable and the skin is already firmer, smoother, more radiant and more even in tone.

A significant difference is generally seen after the first treatment. If more than one session is performed, the results are cumulative and the improvement increases with each session. In addition, once the sessions are complete, the skin continues to improve over the following 3–6 months as the newly activated cells continue to produce new collagen.

How long the results last after laser treatment for scars depends on each person’s lifestyle, age, skin condition and skincare.

At the end of the laser session for scar treatment, the skin looks pink and may feel warm; this subsides within a few hours. During the week after treatment, pinpoint crusting, mild to moderate swelling and skin renewal may occur over 1–10 days, depending on the case.

Both laser treatments are effective for scars. The main difference is that CO2 tends to produce results more quickly, but causes redness, crusting and sometimes post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. The doctor should explain the benefits and effects of each laser and decide which is most appropriate. For higher skin phototypes, picosecond laser is more often recommended.

Both lasers are very effective for treating scars. Depending on the type of scar and the patient’s skin, one may be more beneficial than the other. For example, for severe scars in lower skin phototypes, CO2 laser may be preferable.

Combined laser treatment with hyaluronic acid and/or collagen stimulators is used when, after improving the scar with laser, it remains slightly depressed.
