When is hyaluronic acid filler indicated?

Hyaluronic acid injections are recommended in the following cases:

  • For patients who wish to reduce static wrinkles, such as nasolabial folds.

Is hyaluronic acid filler safe?

Hyaluronic acid wrinkle fillers performed in aesthetic clinics by doctors are very safe procedures. However, the following points should be considered:

  • The product selected by the doctor should be of high quality (with CE certification) and appropriate for the type of wrinkle being treated.
  • Take into account the experience and aesthetic judgement of the practitioner.

How long do the results last?

Around 9–24 months, depending on the type of product injected, age, the area treated, skin quality and lifestyle.

With successive periodic injections, the effect becomes more noticeable and lasts longer. After further aesthetic treatment, another HA session may therefore not be needed as soon, as the beneficial effects may last longer.

In addition, some research shows that after several treatments with hyaluronic acid injections, the skin’s natural collagen production is stimulated.

Frequently asked questions about hyaluronic acid fillers for wrinkles

Hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally produced by the body and is found mainly in the skin (dermis). Its function in the skin is to retain water, providing hydration and volume.

With the ageing process, the hyaluronic acid in our skin degrades and the body also becomes less able to replace it. The result is a loss of volume in facial structures and contours, and the appearance of static wrinkles that give the face an aged and tired appearance.

Laboratory-made hyaluronic acid can be synthesised to be identical to our own and injected into the skin to replace what we gradually lose. In this way, hyaluronic acid can be used to treat wrinkles, reducing their depth and restoring volume.

Not all hyaluronic acids are the same for wrinkle filling. Hyaluronic acid products vary in molecular weight, concentration and degree of cross-linking.

Therefore, not all injectable hyaluronic acid products are suitable for filling every type of wrinkle. A different product is appropriate for each type of skin or facial area. This is a good reason to seek treatment only from aesthetic medicine clinics specialising in hyaluronic acid fillers.

It can be uncomfortable, but it is not painful. This wrinkle treatment can be performed with or without anaesthetic cream because it is generally well tolerated.

Unlike other wrinkle-filling treatments using different materials, hyaluronic acid injections avoid most allergic reactions as well as the formation of small lumps beneath the skin. In general, wrinkle fillers using other absorbable or permanent materials are more likely to cause side effects.

Side effects of hyaluronic acid fillers are very rare and are usually related to the injection. Redness, swelling and bruising may occur in the injected area. This substance is a natural, non-permanent product. Given its properties, any lump will be dissolved and rapidly absorbed by the body.

The most significant side effects of hyaluronic acid injections are caused by obstruction of an artery at the time of injection, leading to tissue necrosis. For this reason, it is very important to be treated by a doctor who knows the techniques used to prevent this. The doctor should also have hyaluronidase available if this occurs, so it can be managed without negative consequences for the patient.

Yes. In addition to hyaluronic acid injections for wrinkle treatment, there are laboratory-manufactured collagen stimulators. These are not hyaluronic acid found in the skin; instead, they stimulate the body’s own collagen production, which will ultimately fill the wrinkle. Examples include injectable calcium hydroxyapatite in gel form and synthetic poly-L-lactic acid.

These substances must be administered correctly because we do not have an enzyme to dissolve them if they are not placed properly, unlike hyaluronidase used to dissolve hyaluronic acid.

Another wrinkle treatment is filling with autologous fat taken from the patient’s own body.

This method uses a natural material, but the fat must be harvested through a minimally invasive surgical procedure, and some of it may be reabsorbed.
