What is an enlarged pore on the face?
Each pore corresponds to the opening of a sebaceous gland. Therefore, very oily skin, has glands that produce more sebum than usual. This sebum is released onto the skin surface, dilating the duct and its opening and giving the skin the appearance of enlarged pores. With age, the development of skin laxity can also make pores appear enlarged.
Treatment for enlarged pores
At Ribe Clinic, we use several methods and technologies to reduce the appearance of enlarged pores, acting mainly on the sebaceous gland. A complete treatment for enlarged facial pores includes these three steps:
- Medical chemical peels to regulate sebum secretion by the sebaceous gland.
- The Fraxel fractional laser or IPL: the laser light acts on the sebaceous gland, reducing sebum production and helping to reduce the appearance of enlarged pores.
- Medical creams with active ingredients that act on the sebaceous gland to regulate its function and on the sebum to modify its composition.

Laser treatment for enlarged pores: before and after

Medical chemical peels for enlarged pores

Medical chemical peels regulate sebum production by the sebaceous gland and cleanse the skin, making pores appear smaller. When less sebum is produced, the opening of the gland corresponding to the pore decreases in size.
The composition of the medical chemical peel used to reduce enlarged facial pores is selected according to the skin type and whether there is an associated condition, such as acne. Peels may contain glycolic acid, retinoids, salicylic acid, lactic acid or citric acid.
To reduce the appearance of enlarged pores with a chemical peel, around 4 sessions are usually required, combined with an at-home cleansing routine and creams.
Fraxel laser or IPL for enlarged pores
At Ribe Clinic, we use the non-ablative fractional laser Fraxel re:store Dual or IPL to act on the sebaceous gland, regulating its function and thereby treating enlarged pores.
The exact number of sessions needed to treat enlarged pores with laser depends on the condition of the skin, the results expected and lifestyle. Generally, around four sessions are performed: one session per month.
After laser treatment for enlarged pores, you can see results from around 7 days onwards, with gradual improvement as the skin continues to improve over the following 3–6 months.
Medical creams for enlarged pores

At Ribe Clinic, we recommend an at-home skincare routine to treat skin with enlarged pores and help reduce their appearance:
- Deep cleansing with sonic cleansing brushes: the best way to reduce the appearance and size of pores is to keep them free from excess oil and bacteria
- Creams with alpha-, beta- and polyhydroxy acids to remove remaining dead skin cells, as well as mattifying creams.
- Creams with glycolic acid as well as salicylic acid for younger skin and lactic acid for more mature skin. Creams containing retinol and retinoic acid.
- Exfoliation may be chemical with retinoids, gentler enzymatic exfoliation, or physical exfoliation with corundum granules or aluminium crystals.
Laser sessions for enlarged pores
From 2 to 4 sessions, depending on the patient’s age and the condition of their skin.
Results
The results of laser treatment for enlarged pores are immediate (from around 7 days) but also progressive. Within a few days, the skin already appears smoother, softer and more radiant, with a more even texture and less visible pores.

Aftercare following a session
Aftercare includes cleansing the skin thoroughly, supporting its recovery with repairing creams and hydrating it with hyaluronic acid. Less is more, as we do not want to clog the pores with too many products.
Make-up can be applied if desired, and normal social activities can be resumed immediately.
