By placing several bioresorbable PDO threads in the dermis, we treat facial skin laxity from within while also stimulating collagen production in the skin.

What does PDO thread treatment involve?

PDO lifting threads for the face, double chin and neck are inserted into the dermis using a technique developed by Korean dermatologists. Their placement is very similar to the cross-hatching filler technique.

PDO lifting threads are bioresorbable, non-pyrogenic and non-toxic monofilaments made from PDO polydioxanone, a material used in cardiac sutures (hence its high safety profile, based on many years of use).

How do they work?

Once the PDO threads have been inserted into the dermis using a fine needle, they create a tightening effect through both their physical action and the stimulation of collagen along the direction in which they have been inserted.

PDO threads with Thermage or collagen stimulators

Combining Thermage radiofrequency or collagen stimulators with PDO threads offers enhanced results when treating facial skin laxity. Each technique separately increases and supports collagen production, and combining them produces an even greater effect.

Thermage first stimulates collagen formation and tightens the skin through heat. After 1 to 2 weeks, we insert the PDO threads into skin that is already “activated and more receptive”, helping us achieve firmer results more quickly.

Collagen stimulators enhance the skin-tightening effect of PDO threads by stimulating collagen formation.

Number of sessions and when to expect results

With a single PDO thread session, the firming effect on the face and neck is immediate and progressive. Results continue to improve 30 days after the session and become established at around 3 months.

Aftercare

After PDO thread treatment for facial skin laxity, a few simple aftercare measures are recommended to support recovery and optimise results:

  • Avoid excessive facial movements, massage or pressure on the treated area during the first week.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise and excessive heat exposure (sauna, UVA rays) during the first few days.
  • Sleep on your back, avoiding direct pressure of the face against the pillow.
  • Keep the skin clean and moisturised according to medical advice.

Always follow the specialist’s personalised instructions.

Frequently asked questions about PDO threads

PDO threads (made from polydioxanone) are resorbable sutures inserted beneath the skin to tighten tissues and stimulate collagen.

The firming effect on the face and neck is immediate. Improvement continues to increase 30 days after the session and becomes established at around 3 months.

The results of this treatment to firm the face and neck vary depending on the patient’s age, degree of skin laxity and skin quality. The results of a single treatment last approximately 10 to 12 months.

It is a safe treatment that very rarely causes complications, as it is a minimally invasive procedure. Mild and temporary swelling, bruising and tightness may occur and then resolve.

Yes, treatment with PDO threads is not permanent. The threads are naturally resorbed over several months, but while they are present they stimulate collagen production, helping to prolong the tightening effect.

Results generally last between 10 and 12 months, after which repeating the procedure may be recommended to maintain skin firmness and rejuvenation.

PDO thread treatment is not usually painful. It is performed with local anaesthetic in the treatment area, which minimises discomfort.

Most patients describe the sensation as mild pressure or tightness rather than pain, and this discomfort usually subsides within a few days.

  • Immediate (subtle) tightening effect and progressive improvement by stimulating collagen production.
  • They improve firmness and elasticity, refine skin texture and soften fine lines.
  • A minimally invasive procedure with quick recovery and few restrictions.
  • Natural-looking results, adjustable according to the number, type and vectors of the threads.
  • Versatile across treatment areas: cheekbones, jawline and neck.
  • Can be combined with other techniques (radiofrequency, HIFU, neuromodulators and collagen stimulators) to enhance results.
  • Resorbable material with a good safety profile when used by qualified medical professionals.
  • Simple maintenance to help prolong the effect over time.

Yes, PDO thread treatment is safe when performed by a specialist doctor in an appropriate clinical setting. The threads are made from a biocompatible, resorbable material that has been used in surgery for many years, giving it a high safety profile.

Possible side effects are usually mild and temporary, such as swelling, redness or minor bruising, which generally resolves within a few days.

PDO thread treatment is safe, but like any medical procedure it may cause some mild and temporary side effects, such as:

  • Redness or swelling in the treated area.
  • Minor bruising or tenderness to the touch.
  • Mild tightness or discomfort with facial movements during the first few days.
  • In rare cases, mild asymmetry, which usually resolves on its own.

These effects generally resolve within a short time and the patient can quickly return to their usual routine.
